The lambda sensors can fail without the ECU noticing that it has happened, so don't assume that just because the management light isn't on that the lambda sensor doesn't need replacing. If you get emissions problems during an MoT, this is the first place to look. Also the coolant temperature senders can fail and this will stop the car from going into closed loop mode when it uses the lambda sensor so that's another item to replace if emissions are causing problems before you start looking at...

The running gear on a GTE 16V is as tough as nails, which is great, but it also means they're a prime candidate for sustained abuse. The hydraulic lifters can tap from cold, which isn't a problem as long as they quieten down after a reasonable period.
