The Mahindra-Renault Logan was Kg* /I supposed to be the biggest success f stories. It wasn't particularly fast or fun to drive, but I fondly remember jgrfHWy the interstate trips I did with my is^wSBlC'iamry in the Logan when il was Kiilli'^if' v\ aunched. With full complemer I ot five passengers and their luggage the Logan was at ease gliding over potholes and making to our destination on time while returning 18-19kmpl. Ask any body who owns one and he would swear by its capabilities. Of course, he would have lived all this while explaining those to people who questioned his choice.
Spacious and functional Interiors, a wide back seat that can easily seat three abreasi, a big boot, a fuel efficient diesel engine, and ride quality that can rival cars that are segments above it, the Logan had it al. It was a car that looked tailor made for ndia. Except that its costume looked (ike it was made by a very bad tailor. You could have delicious well assorted sweets but would you touch it if it was wrapped in soiled newspaper? The Logan wasn't exactly offensive, but it isn't any appealing either The sheet metal had minimal details, simple stamping and straight edges to reduce costs. But was it really cost effective? :i saved a few thousands than on the Fiesta, but no one really cared to know.
The Logan was a car that typical car buyer in :ndia wanted, a few years before its launch. But then their tastes suddenly changed. Looks and aspirational value began to draw a curtain over practicality and usability. The Logan felt basic and utilitarian when rivals (ike the Swift Dzire charmed buyers with more up-market feel and friendlier pricing. The irony is, the Logan looks better proportioned than Maruti's quirky looking Dzire,
The sales began to drop, and so did the company's interest in the car. Mahindra thought ¡I would continue the Logan saga and bought stakes in the joint venture. To cut a long story short, the 'vlahindra Renault Alliance became the third Indo-French joint venture to flop after the PAL- Peugeot and the Peugeot ■ Chamundi Mopeds tie ups. Which brings up the Question: Why doesn; Indo-Freneh automobile joint ventures do well in India?
