Lord Mexborough
■ If there is a more passionate car enthusiast, we've yet to meet him. Lord Mexborough owns one of the most fascinating collections of cars we've ever seen. It includes a 3-litre 911 RS. a 2.7 RS, a Daytona and both the 959 and the 288 GTO featured on page 74. Lord Mexborough has owned both the 959 and GTO from new, and used them as daily drivers for two years. Today this pair is worth over £600,000, but he didn't bat an eyelid when we asked if we could drive them. A true gentleman.
If one thing resonated with me after my dinner with Luca, it was an almost casual reference to Porsche as a competitor. Listening back through my dictaphone recording, Luca's exact words were: 'Porsche has been, with our [vis, our traditional rival — even on the tracks.' Back at the evo office we discussed this statement and a theme for this issue was born — and as you'll discover on page 64, Porsche has built a remarkable six-cylinder rival for not just Ferrari's '8' but its ultimate 12-cylinder car too.
